The Rhode Island Community Investment Cooperative is a public-benefit corporation in the state of Rhode Island acting with the values and structure of a cooperative. The Cooperative was established for the purposes of holding Rhode Island’s first community investment fund.
For every investor regardless of financial contribution.
The Cooperative centers ownership and control in the community, with our people and places. Every investor in the fund, no matter their financial contribution, gets one vote. Investors elect Board members, and the Board is made up of investors. An Investment Committee made up primarily of residents of prioritized neighborhoods will vet every potential investment, and applicants must demonstrate that their project has substantial support from neighbors. Through these shared governance practices, the Cooperative strengthens community capacity and increases community capital.
The Cooperative is brought to you by the team behind Local Return, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building community wealth in Rhode Island through ownership and investment. Local Return continues to work closely with the Cooperative by providing administrative and operational support.
